English
Rhetoric and Professional Writing Program
The Rhetoric and Professional Writing Program consists of a Concentration or a Minor. The focus on honing job skills, as well as critical thinking skills associated with the analysis of and practice of rhetoric, make students who choose this program very competitive in the workplace.
Issues such as the practice of formatting conventions, the use of professional language, and the awareness of contexts are just a few things students practice while in the Professional Writing and Technical Writing courses. The Rhetoric courses delve more deeply into the elements of persuasive writing that give students an edge in crafting those documents that will change their futures for the better.
Students gain practical experience through client projects and internships, but also through special projects done in coordination with faculty as they arise.
Creative Writing
An Education for the Working Writer
The Department of English and Modern Languages at Longwood University, situated in the beautiful rolling piedmont of Virginia, is pleased to offer a concentration in Creative Writing, as well as an undergraduate minor. A staff of professional writers and readers collaborate to provide a sense of community and shared purpose among the undergraduates in our Creative Writing Program.
The Creative Writing Program at Longwood functions within the English major, guaranteeing the strong foundation in literature every writer needs to pursue their craft. Introductory and advanced workshops in poetry, fiction, nonfiction and drama are offered every semester, allowing the student invaluable cross-genre experience in preparation for lives as working writers.
Our program and faculty seek to offer an education that will encourage students to pursue a life of letters, a life that allows them to explore the wonder of the world through writing, whether that life leads them on to graduate study, into the workforce as a professional writer, or into the classroom as a teacher of writing. We believe in the very real service provided to a society by its working writers.
